Montejaque to Ronda

Hiking - Moderate

This walk takes us from the small white village of Montejaque, nestled into a niche amongst rocky mountain peaks at the edge of the Sierra de Grazalema, to Ronda. We follow the original pathways that took villagers, drovers and their wares from the mountain village into the town in the days before cars, roads and railways.

After a short tour of the village, including the old laundry, we exit the village via a stone “zigzag path”. This is a short, steep climb that takes us up into the mountains, past a small chapel and a hidden plateau. We continue through the hills, past huge agave cactus plants, olive groves and farms, with stunning views across the countryside all the way. Just outside Ronda, we climb to a viewpoint from where the full drama of Ronda’s position on top of a sheer rock wall lays before us. Dropping down into the fertile valley below the town, we walk directly below the walls of the gorge and enjoy iconic views of the Puente Nuevo bridge, before climbing a series of steps up the face of the gorge to finish in the old town.

Note: Most of this route is on wide tracks and quiet lanes with easy walking surface. The descent from Montejaque plateau is quite steep and loose for extended periods. The final climb from the base of the valley up into Ronda is steep in places, before climbing a series of steps up the gorge into the old town.
