Montejaque and El Hacho
Hiking - Moderate
DESCRIPTION
This is a pleasant circular walk through the hills and olive groves behind Montejaque village. We circuit El Hacho, an unusually shaped peak formed many centuries ago by major earth movements which lifted a huge slab of rock out of the ground to create a sloping plateau with a sharp, angular edge, reflected in the mountain's name 'The Axe'. The mountain overlooks the village and we gain a changing perspective of its sloping form as we walk. Read more.....The route begins at the edge of the village, walking up the main street, past the charmingly restored old laundry and onto the plaza. This is the center of village life, where we find the church, Town Hall, central fountain, hotel and bars. We exit the village via 'donkey street' and begin a steady climb up into the hills, surrounded by rocky limestone crags. We walk through the heart of the olive groves, looking up towards the sloping plateau of the mountain. We then take a small pathway to cut across directly under the cliff edge, with the rocks towering above us, before returning to the village. |
