Grazalema Village & Reservoir

Hiking - Easy

This walk tours the narrow streets of Grazalema and explores into the mountains which immediately surround it. An abandoned church, remains of ancient houses and a modern dam and reservoir - all with fantastic views down onto the village and the Grazalema natural park beyond.

From a veiwpoint on the edge of the village, we head through the narrow streets, where bull-runs still take place annually on the Festival day of the Virgen del Carmen. We walk across the main plaza, from where many spectators watch the bulls, and up past the village swimming pool for views down on to the village. We turn off the main road onto a tiny pathway which leads up into the hillls and to an abandoned church, overlooking the village. Continuring on, we find the remains of old village houses and long-abandoned gathering places. Then we drop back to the village and cross over the road to walk up to a large reservoir. Walking round its perimeter we enjoy fabulous vistas, before descending back into the village.

Note: This walk is mainly on small narrow pathways which can be uneven and stony underfoot; some parts have a drop to the side. Whilst this short walk includes a relatively large amount of ascent, it is not steep or difficult.
