Grazalema Natural Park
Hiking - Easy
This guided walk takes us cross country through the heart of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park. The route follows an ancient path that connected the villages of Grazalema and Montejaque, heading through cork oak and holm oak forest, in an area dotted with natural springs, which have been important water sources for livestock and wildlife for centuries
We begin at the edge of the Grazalema Natural Park. This is an area of rocky mountain crags, karst valleys, and cork oak forest. We spend time in the Hundidero valley, walking along mountain pathways and old drovers’ routes, through holm oak forests and along a river valley, enjoying a succession of beautiful views all the way. We finish at the edge of Montejaque, an old Berber village, set high in a rocky niche, hidden from view until you are almost upon it. Stop for optional refreshments in Montejaque and visit the mirador “viewpoint” at the top of the village, reputedly the site of an Arab fort…though nothing remains of it. Return to Ronda in our minibus.
Note: The trail surface is mainly in good condition and easy walking for the whole of this route. There are a number of stream crossings, which can be rocky underfoot. They are normally dry but after wet weather can contain a small amount of water.
