Starting out from Ronda, your self-guided leisure cycling tour will take you via five delightfully different white villages - Setenil de las Bodegas*, Alcala del Valle, Torre Alhaquime, Montejaque* and Benaojan - staying overnight in two of them*. You will also visit the remains of the Roman amphitheatre at Acinipo and stop off at a waterfall and beauty spot at the Cueva del Gato (Cat Cave). Cycle at your own pace each day, taking plenty of opportunities to enjoy the views and stopping regularly to try out the local tapas. You finish back in Ronda for a final night with time to explore this historic town and its spectacular gorge and bridge.
Day 1 - Arrival in Ronda
Welcome to Ronda
Check in to your hotel and enjoy the sights and sounds of the beautiful clifftop town of Ronda. Briefing and bike set up will take place on your first evening
Day 2 - Ronda to Setenil de las Bodegas
45km - 666m ascent
From Ronda, cycle northwards past vineyards and olive groves to the village of Alcala del Valle to see the impressive baroque church. Continue on to Torre Alhaquime, a small and pretty village on the ancient border of disputed Muslim and Christian areas, with the ruins of the old Nazari tower-fortress still visible. Enjoy lunch in either village before heading down to Setenil de las Bodegas, located in a river valley. Large overhanging limestone cliffs through the lower parts of the village create a unique atmosphere and "cavehouse" dwellings built into the rock overhangs form the basis of many houses, shops and cafes. Overnight in village hotel.
Day 3 - Setenil de las Bodegas to Montejaque
35km - 811m ascent
Cycle up to the remains of the Roman hilltop settlement of Acinipo. The town was built to house retired Roman soldiers and thrived in the first century AD. It is worth taking a walk up the hill to visit the remains of the (partially rebuilt) amphitheatre and to catch the views from the high escarpment across to the valley below. From Acinipo, descend past bodegas, vineyards and wheat fields - the two main crops grown here since Roman times - and on though cork oak forests to the village of Montejaque. The tree bark is harvested to provide the corks for '000s of bottles of locally and nationally produced wines. Overnight in traditional hotel in the centre of Montejaque village.
Day 4 - Montejaque to Ronda
18km - 437m ascent
From Montejaque, cycle down out of the mountains into the Guadiaro valley to the Cueva del Gato (Cat Cave), so called because of the shape of the cave in the rockface. This is a local beauty spot with a year-round waterfall which cascades from a cave mouth into a crystal clear pool of water. Then wind your way though the countryside, taking a gradual climb back up to Ronda in time for tapas and sightseeing on your final night in town.
Day 5 - Depart Ronda

WILL I BE FIT ENOUGH?
Our self-guided tours are designed for leisure cyclists rather than cycling experts or people looking for large daily mileages. There are hills throughout the region which will need to be tackled but we keep daily distances manageable, particularly on days with more hills. Take things at your own pace and anyone who is reasonably fit and happy to be on a bike for 4+ hours a day will enjoy this tour.
Just remember that in summer, higher temperatures can make cycling seem harder so we suggest starting soon after 9am and aiming to finish before 2pm.
WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?
Double or twin room with en suite facilities in all locations.
Ronda hotel is normally 4****. In Setenil you will stay in a traditional hotel just on the edge of the village. Eat in the hotel restaurant or try out the village tapas bars for dinner. In Montejaque, your hotel is right on the central village square. It has its own restaurant or there is also a highly acclaimed restaurant in the village.
What to Bring
The essential kit to enjoy your cycling holiday
- Helmet (bring you own or use ours - free of charge)
- Padded cycling shorts (essential kit for staying comfortable over a few days' riding)
- Your own saddle if you prefer - let us know if you are bringing one
- Cycling gloves
- Cycling tops or T shirts
- Sports bra (ladies only!)
- Cycling shoes (let us know if you want clip-in pedals) or trainers - firm soles are best.
- Sun cream and after-sun lotion
- Casual clothes, swimwear and footwear
- Health insurance policy document (for UK travellers, a European Health Insurance Card, EHIC, will give you access to reduced cost medical services in Spain but it is not an alternative to travel insurance. It will not cover any private medical healthcare or costs such as mountain rescue, repatriation costs or lost or stolen property. Therefore it is important to have both an EHIC and a valid private travel insurance policy. For winter riding
- extra body layers with long sleeves (thin thermal tops are great)
- leggings or cycling tights
- light waterproof/windproof jacket
- neck scarf / snood (great as sweat bands in the summer and for warmth in the winter)
