Montejaque Circular
Cycling - Moderate
This route makes a circuit to the west of Ronda, passing through rural countryside and through two small, sleepy white villages. It includes a couple of good hill climbs which will ensure a good work out for your legs and lungs but you also get to enjoy some long, sweeping descents as your reward.
From Ronda we head down to the Guadiaro river, where we make a short stop at the Cueva del Gato, “Cat Cave”, named after the shape of the cave mouth in the mountain. This local beauty spot, with a small waterfall and beautiful pool of crystal clear (but very cold!) water, is the exit point of a 7km underground river which begins up in the mountains by the Hundidero Dam— where we are headed. We climb steadily up into the mountains, through the village of Benaojan and on to Montejaque, where we usually make a quick coffee stop on the village square. Just beyond Montejaque, the Hundidero Dam hides within a narrow rocky gorge, providing us with a short, challenging stretch of twisting mountain road which dips into the gorge and back out the other side. We continue down through cork forest into the valley of La Indiana, before climbing back up the hill to Ronda.
