El Burgo and Lakes of El Chorro
Cycling - Challenging
DESCRIPTION
This road ride takes us along quiet roads from Puerto del Viento out to the region known as Andalucia’s “Lake District”, where three rivers have been dammed to create a series of beautiful blue lakes. We visit the original dam, officially opened in 1921 by King Alfonso XII, and then ride on to the gorge of El Chorro, where the river has cut its way through 200m tall limestone cliffs to carve a narrow channel, just 3m wide at the base. Read more.....We take a short drive out from Ronda up into dramatic limestone mountains, where we begin our ride. The first section of the route follows a narrow, twisting mountain road which skirts the edge of the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park. We enjoy amazing views across the mountain landscape and then an exhilarating descent into the village of El Burgo. From El Burgo, the route continues along an undulating road through pine forest and past arable farmland to the village of Ardales. A climb out of the village takes us onwards to the lakes and then we follow a descending road through the strange weather-worn rocks of the Guadahorce park, down to the gorge at El Chorro. There is time for optional refreshments overlooking the final lake with views of El Chorro gorge before we return to Ronda in our minibus. |
