Pileta Cave and Jimera
Cycling - Moderate
DESCRIPTION
This route uses a combination of roads and tracks to explore the limestone mountains to the west of Ronda. You will visit two of the caves formed by thousands of years of water pouring through the hillsides and enjoy fabulous views across miles of craggy limestone mountains. The climb to the Pileta cave is long but generally fairly steady and the final descent is long, fast, twisting and fun. Read more.....From Ronda, we make a long steady descent through the arable countryside to the Guadiaro river valley. Along the river, we make a short stop at the Cueva del Gato, “Cat Cave”, named for the shape of the cave mouth in the mountain. This local beauty spot, with a small waterfall and beautiful pool of crystal clear water, is the exit point of a 7km underground river. Each day, thousands of litres of very cold water exit the cave via a waterfall to create a stunning water pool. We then climb steadily up into the mountains to visit the Pileta Cave (optional guided tour, entry €10), where you can see prehistoric cave paintings and huge stalactites deep inside the mountain cave. We finish with a long descent to the hamlet of Jimera estacion, where there is time for optional refreshments before we return to Ronda in our minibus. |
