Walking Holiday in the Genal Valley, Andalucía

Explore white villages, chestnut forests and quiet river valleys on a multi‑day walking adventure through one of Andalucía’s most authentic landscapes.

The Genal Valley is one of Andalucía’s last truly untouched landscapes — it is a rural haven which amazingly sits only 90 mins drive from the busy Costa del Sol. Dotted through the hillsides and valleys are 16 white villages, which retain their traditional charm and pace of life. This self-guided route passes through 9 of the villages, overnighting in 6 of them. The trail leads you through cool woodland paths, terraced hillsides and timeless rural communities, shaped by centuries of chestnut farming and mountain life. It’s an immersive journey into authentic Andalucía, where each day brings new scenery, new viewpoints and the warm welcome of small, characterful villages.

Itinerary

Arrival Day in Ronda

Check in to your hotel and enjoy the sights and sounds of the beautiful clifftop town of Ronda.

  • Extra sightseeing days can be added on request

  • The welcome meeting and brief usually take place the evening before your first walk

Walking Day 1 - Ronda to Cartajima

13km +574m

Leaving Ronda behind, you ascend from the clifftop city into quiet countryside, following old drovers’ paths that wind through olive groves and open farmland. The route gradually climbs into the rugged mountains and the upper Genal Valley, where the scenery shifts to chestnut forests and wide valley views. The final approach to Cartajima is a beautiful ridge‑line walk overlooking the deep wooded valleys that cover this part of the Serranía. Cartajima itself is one of the highest white villages in the valley — peaceful, traditional and surrounded by dramatic terrain.

Walking Day 2 - Cartajima to Benadalid

19km +691m

A varied and rewarding day linking the high villages of the upper Genal Valley with the Moorish‑influenced settlements of the middle valley. You begin with classic mountain walking through chestnut groves, terraced hillsides and open viewpoints before reaching Atajate, the smallest village in the Genal Valley — a tiny, peaceful settlement surrounded by a dramatic landscape. From here, the route continues across open terrain with long valley views toward Benadalid, crowned by its fortress. Steady ascents, quiet rural tracks and contrasting landscapes make this one of the more sustained days of the tour.

Walking Day 3 - Benadalid to Jubrique

12km +443m

Today’s walk takes you deeper into the lower Genal Valley, following historic caminos through cork oak forests, rolling hills and shaded ravines. The scenery becomes greener and more enclosed as you descend toward the Río Genal, where cool water, lush vegetation and steep valley walls create one of the most atmospheric sections of the tour. The final approach to Jubrique is especially beautiful, with the village tucked into a natural amphitheatre of forested slopes.

Walking Day 4 - Jubrique to Algatocin

16km +816m

A superb and varied day with a descent into the deep folds of the lower Genal Valley. The path drops steadily through cork oak and pine forest until you reach one of the most memorable features of the region: the suspended walkway above the Río Genal, a beautifully engineered section that carries you along the steep valley wall with views of the river below. After leaving the walkway, the route climbs continuously toward the high ridges above Algatocín, rewarded with wide panoramas across the Genal Valley and its chain of white villages. Forest shade, open viewpoints and quiet rural tracks give the day a strong sense of progression from deep valley to airy ridge.

Walking Day 5 - Algatocin to Gaucin

11km +407m

Your final day is a shorter but wonderfully scenic stage linking the upper Genal Valley with one of Andalucía’s most atmospheric hilltop villages. The route follows a mix of forest paths, open hillsides and ridge‑line viewpoints with constant views toward the distant peaks and the Strait of Gibraltar. The approach to Gaucín is unforgettable — the village rises sharply on a rocky spine crowned by its castle, marking a spectacular finish to your multi‑day journey through the Genal Valley.

FAQs

 Where will I be walking?

Our Walking Tours are designed to follow the ‘less travelled path', walking almost entirely away from roads on a mix of drovers' trails, tracks and pathways. Our routes go into the remotest parts of the Serrania de Ronda, so you will often be well away from 'civilisation' for the day.

How Fit Do I Need To Be?

All our Walking Tours are graded at a ‘Moderate’ level, for which you need to be capable of walking for a minimum of 4 hours in hilly and mountainous terrain. Every day includes notable hill climbs, with some steep descents and ascents and some sections on loose or rocky surfaces. While your main luggage is being transferred for you, be prepared to carry the necessary provisions and equipment to see you through the day. Check the individual tour Itinerary for a daily breakdown of distance and ascent.

 What’s The Weather Like?

Our walking tours run from March through to November, with the best weather from March to June and from September to November. Most routes are also possible during the summer months, but we recommend an earlier start to beat the main heat of the day, and don’t forget to carry plenty of water.

 What Happens To My Luggage?

We transfer all your main luggage for you. On remote days, where you pass no 'civilisation' be prepared to carry appropriate provisions and equipment to see you through the day.

How Do I Navigate Each Day?

Navigation on this tour is very easy with our phone app. RidewithGPS. We provide personalised daily routes from door-to-door of each day’s accommodation. The app shows maps and daily routes in great detail, with distances and route profiles, so you always know what is coming up. The app is designed for use in offline mode, so you don't need to use Data on your phone and can still navigate in areas where there is no phone signal.

 What Meals Are Included?

All accommodations include breakfast (unless otherwise stated). Lunch and dinner are not included, so you are free to eat when and where you wish. We mark up your map with suggested lunch locations. Your hosts can recommend dining options, or sometimes they will serve dinner – this information will be included in your daily route notes.

What If I Need To Cancel Or Change My Booking?

If you need to cancel or change the dates of a booking, we have a scaled set of charges based on the work already completed and any costs already incurred that we cannot get back. If you re-book a holiday with us within 12 months of a cancellation which has incurred charges, we will credit up to 50% of the retained amount to the new holiday. Our full cancellation policy can be found here
