British Cycling Mountain Bike Leadership Qualification

Our guides are qualified by British Cycling

British Cycling is the national governing body for cycling, working across all levels and six disciplines of the sport (BMX, Mountain Bike, Cyclo-Cross, Road, Track and Cycle Speedway), from providing the support and encouragement people need to get riding their bikes for the first time, to being home to the hugely successful Great Britain Cycling Team.

British Cycling invests huge amounts of time and money into the development of mountain bike coaches and guides who are then ready to help share knowledge, enjoyment, safe practices and bike handling skills with enthusiastic riders of all levels and experience. British Cycling awards create industry standards and build a network of skilled mountain bike leaders who are keen to share their passion for mountain biking and their mountain bike skills with others.

Wayne, of Hike + Bike, holds British Cycling’s Level 2 Mountain Bike Leadership Award, which is the highest award of its type currently available. Put simply, this award enables experienced mountain bikers to safely guide riders in all types of terrain, on- and off road, providing them with a great day out and helping to spread the mountain biking bug.

As we all know, riding rough terrain is not always simple and when operating in the great outdoors it is crucial that a mountain bike leader is properly trained and qualified to deal with all eventualities. The Level 2 qualification provides expert advice to enable riders to be confident as a leader in a variety of terrain, while allowing them the freedom to tailor rides to suit the needs of those they are leading.

Qualification is achieved through both practical and classroom activities, with a focus on getting out and riding a bike with others, utilising the leadership and mountain bike skills which are key to the role. This is supported by a log of a minimum number of hours and types of riding, together with First Aid qualification and MRB checks.

The course covers a wide range of topics including:

  • Planning and delivery of rides that are appropriate for your group
  • Leading techniques for effective group management
  • Map reading and navigation for a flowing journey
  • Management of accidents and emergency situations
  • Equipment set-up and trailside repairs
  • Core mountain bike techniques

With this qualification, Wayne can ensure you will enjoy your Hike + Bike mountain biking and cycling experience, whatever your level of skill or riding preferences, and go away hungry for more.
